Chasing Circles is an ongoing series by Lieselot Hoedt in which the circle takes centre stage. A shape whose infinite nature has fascinated her since childhood.
The circle draws attention and guides the viewer’s gaze towards what Hoedt wants to reveal. Sometimes it is already present in the image; at other times, she adds it herself. Its placement is deliberate, without striving for perfection. This makes the intervention feel natural and lends the image a certain playfulness. When she adds the circle by hand, it creates a sense of depth that feels strangely unfamiliar.
The circle enters into a dialogue with the lines, planes and other shapes within the image. By looking at close range, framing carefully and sometimes intervening by hand, Hoedt seeks a balance between these elements.
In Chasing Circles, Hoedt also limits her palette to the three primary colours: red, yellow and blue. By restricting form and colour, she brings the essence to light: the interplay of composition and colour. An accessible visual language that invites enjoyment and a sense of calm.Archival pigment print on
